Part 3 (3)

Yuu-chan  2024.07.19. 12:15

Inside the laboratory was a mess. The groups had fallen apart: all the scientists were pushed back into a corner, all the remaining soldiers that they left here for reinforcement and protection had formed a solid wall around them, and it seemed like Seraing and his team got back just in time to see the issue.

The monsters that they’d previously cornered, that were already in the building, started to break out. They got back into the place where the refugees were hiding, but they showcased the same symptoms as the creatures outside: their body language was speaking about confusion and fear, rather than malicious intents. It seemed like the only reason they growled and chattered their teeth was because they were defending themselves, and although they threw themselves forward a couple of times, the direction of their movement always pointed towards the exit. These ones wanted to get out as well.

But the next moment made Seraing freeze in his movements. He felt like time was slowing down, or even stopping for a couple of seconds. He saw a familiar, blond hair between the walls of the soldiers – actually, many of the scientists were there, but he only recognised that one… and that familiar, lovely figure was trying to grab something in the hands of another person. It was a young officer; he seemed seventeen at max.

He had that grenade launcher in his arms. It was not the same type that was used a few weeks ago on that residential building: it was a more powerful and longer-ranged one if he wanted to be very specific. Some would say it’s a semi-mortar, according to its range and destructive power.

Seraing of course had seen that before, this was the reason for his hesitation in the first place.

He heard Dr Ji’s words, he was shouting angrily at the boy: “YOU WILL KILL US ALL!”, as he put his right hand on the weapon to snatch it from the young officer.

But maybe because of fear or the heat of the argument… the weapon was fired.

It was not only fired: the shot was missed, and the weapon had malfunctioned. Just the snap of a second Seraing thought, they certainly hadn’t checked those weapons for distortions which were too dangerous to use anyway – but he had no more chance to think about that.

The explosion’s range was very wide, considering it was just a “backfire”. The gun was still a semi-mortar. Obviously, it was much more deadly than a single handgun.

Seraing’s hearing dulled and his ears rang. He got used to the explosive sounds, the scream and everything, but at that second he forgot everything he knew. He couldn’t blink. He watched, how the people and monsters around the boy were flying out like when water splashed to the ground and spread through everywhere after. The droplets were now dead bodies.

In an instant, he snapped out of this state, reality fell on him as if a heavy, hot cloud descended from above and consumed him. His legs started to move on their own, before he even thought about it. Not only him, but everyone around him started to run towards the scene. Seraing’s entire body cramped into a solid lump, his limbs were shaking, and couldn’t even walk properly, as he was trying to search for that one person.

He didn’t see where he landed… which direction it was… he should be here… he cannot be…

He stopped when he heard a weak whimper, and his eyes immediately turned to the right side.

On three other people, Dr Ji was lying. His white lab coat was torn on his right shoulder, and the bottom of the coat was missing, and thick blood was spreading through it, continuously painting the fabric red.

Seraing jumped over two bodies to get there, and fell on his knees.

“SOMEONE COME HELP!” He heard himself shouting, but his voice was so shaky and high, he almost didn’t recognise himself.

Dr Ji heard him, and opened his eyes. His head was resting on his left shoulder, so first he was just blankly staring forward. Then his face put on a grimace, as he was slowly looking up, and found Seraing. They looked into each other’s eyes. The doctor’s glasses were gone, but he seemed to recognise him.

“Doctor… hold on. Just hold on.” Seraing said quietly, and his voice was still the same as before. Dr Ji’s face relaxed a bit, and his eyes widened.

“Are you… who are you… what have you done with Seraing?”

“Huh…?” Seraing instantly was thinking about brain damage, but then the blond man lifted his hand, and put his fingers onto his face. Seraing couldn’t hold back, covering the ice-cold fingers with his own palm, hanging his head into the touch.

“You are… always… so calm… what happened…?” He asked weakly with a hoarse voice. So there was probably no brain damage… thank God.

“Nothing… nothing…” Seraing said it instinctively, not knowing what to say. He looked at the doctor’s right side.

How to tell someone that their limbs were missing? No… how to tell the person he loved that he was severely injured and that he was afraid of losing him?

“Seraing…” Dr Ji drew his attention back to his face. He seemed confused and paler than ever. “I… I’m probably just panicking… and I’m probably overdramatic… but can you check my right hand? It feels weird…”

Seraing couldn’t speak, and didn’t dare to look in that direction again. He knew he had to do something to save Dr Ji, but his body wasn’t moving. He needed every bit of energy left in his body to not cry or shout, to not lose his composure.

Someone came, and knelt down beside them. Dr Ji’s arm had fallen, and he closed his eyes, as the other person was examining him at that side. Seraing needed a handful of seconds to notice that the Vice Admiral and Haoyu also stood beside the scientist.

The other doctor straightened up, and looked at Seraing.

“I can stop the bleeding, but… I don’t have anything else. We may have some painkillers… but not in this room. If someone can get it from the residential rooms… The chances are very low…”

“I will get those painkillers.” Haoyu suddenly spoke, as soon as the scientist had finished speaking, and before Seraing could’ve said anything, he swiftly turned on his heels.

“I’ll go with him.” The Vice Admiral probably recognised Seraing’s expression of worry for his Judge. “Once we had come back, we regroup ourselves. Is it enough time for you?”

Enough to say goodbye and grieve? Seraing was deeply moved and appreciated by the Vice Admiral’s gesture, and just nodded, but he didn’t think he would be able to function well anytime soon. But for now, he just went with the idea.

The scientist started to cut down a bit more from the torn-apart lab coat. Dr Ji was silent, but Seraing saw his eyes squinting, moving under his eyelids, shutting tightly and opening up, just like how he pressed his lips together – he was awake.

Because he couldn’t do anything to lessen the suffering of Dr Ji, Seraing just found his cold hand and grabbed it with his own, trying to warm it up, stroking it gently. Dr Ji looked up at some point, and his gaze contained so many things, that Seraing couldn’t even untangle.

Seraing tried to smile at him.

Dr Ji’s lips trembled, and he suddenly closed his eyes; between his eyebrows, there was a deep wrinkle, as he tried to hold back something so hard. Probably his tears. Seraing couldn’t blame him for a second; in fact, he was impressed by how much composure Dr Ji had now.

“It’s done.” The scientist had spoken after a long time. Seraing looked up, and examined the bondages. They only had other clothes that they used to stop the bleeding, no gauze or any ointments and no anaesthetic injections. There was a very tight strap at Dr Ji’s armpit – at the point, where his arm was torn. He didn’t have much left from his right arm. But, it seemed like the strap was good enough to lessen the bleeding. And at his leg: it was in a better shape, but it was also missing under his knee.

This was the first time Dr Ji had enough courage to look at himself.

“Don’t move around too much.” The scientist said. “If you’re careful, this can last for a little while, until…”

Until what? Probably the scientist was forgetting that there was not much hope for them anymore, and went pale as his sentence halted. But Seraing thanked him regardless, and then he put his arms under Dr Ji’s body to lift him up from the bodies. He tried to be as careful as he was able to.

 “Seraing…”

Dr Ji’s head pressed onto Seraing’s neck in this position, and his healthy, whole arm was grabbing on his shoulder weakly.

 “Hm?”

“Bring me back to the control panels. I refuse… to do nothing…”

“You should not move.” He said quietly, but he turned to the direction of the dashboard as the doctor wished.

“I won’t… my mouth doesn’t count. I will… try to contact… with the Underground… City… Base…” Reaching this point, he had to stop after every word, and he breathed faster already. Despite how much Seraing tried to avoid shaking him, he probably caused pain with his movements.

 “I’m sorry.” Seraing said.

“Just… just bring me there… I will be okay. I’m not dead at least.”

“You shouldn’t have interfered with that idiot.” Seraing scolded him gently as he walked over to the room’s other side. There were some others, who carried the bodies as well. Thank God, he was carrying a lively one.

 “I… didn’t expect… him to shoot… that thing.”

The scientists in this part of the laboratory were frightened to death, but seeing one of their best person still holding onto his life made them awake a little bit. They approached them, as Seraing reached the control panels.

 “Put him here…”

“No, he will fall down! He cannot sit on a chair!”

“Oh… right… we have some beds in the other rooms but…”

“Just put me to the wall, Seraing. Please.”

Seraing followed his request and carefully placed the doctor at the bottom of the wall right next to the control counter. Another scientist was jumping to him, handing him a walky-talky-like device that was connected to one of the panels with wire.

“Bring some water to him as well!” Seraing ordered. “Doctor… you should rest first.”

“It is… my duty. I promised I will take care of the reinforcements… remember? You entrusted me with it.”

“I did.” Seraing’s voice cracked again, but he started to feel stronger, he was able to regulate his words. “But that happened before you were wounded. You can still try later. Others can take this task from you until that. You lost… a lot of blood. You have to replenish your energy.”

Dr Ji pressed a smile onto his face, but because he was so pale and his skin was so shiny from his sweat that had poured down on his temples and jaw, this smile was a bit pitiful.

At that point, Haoyu came back running: he was much more frightened than before, but he brought a big box in his arms, almost tripping in his own legs in his hurry.

 “CAPTAIN! I BROUGHT IT!”

“Don’t shout. Thank you. Did you bring enough for everyone?”

“We took all that we could find.” Haoyu had fallen on his knees beside him, and put the box next to Dr Ji’s body. “There were some other medicines too, we just grabbed everything. I don’t really know any of these… doctor, please… if you tell me, how can I help…”

Seraing put his hand on the younger Judge’s shoulder.

“I’m sure these scientists all can use injections. They can help Dr Ji. Don’t bother him now. We will regroup soon. Go and get some water for yourself and wait.”

The other Judge understood him and nodded, standing up again.

“I will wait with the Vice Admiral.”

Then, he was running in a direction somewhere behind Seraing.

 “Captain, huh?”

Seraing looked back: Dr Ji’s smile was a bit livelier. One of the scientists had already started to apply a few flasks of painkillers into empty needles, and began to sort them out – it was not just Dr Ji, who needed some, but he was the first one, who got it, and he got some extra for the near future if he had to use them.

Seraing smiled back again.

 “I don’t think I like it much.”

“Why not, Captain?” It looked like Dr Ji was already in a good enough shape to bully him. Strangely, this made Seraing’s heart tingle, and his worry started to fade. “It fits you. You deserve it.”

To not get embarrassed and shy all of a sudden, Seraing reached out to tuck into his own hair, lifting his hat for a moment. As he regained his calmness, he sighed deeply.

“Well, if you say it, it sounds much better.”

“Are you still trying to flirt with me?”

“I’ve never planned to stop with that.”

Dr Ji looked at him deeply, and Seraing still smiled, trying to reassure him, that their last meeting indeed did not affect him in the wrong way – he felt ashamed for that evening, and he knew, they needed a bit of time to calm down, but he missed the doctor greatly these days.

“You should go. Your subordinates are waiting for you. I also have some duties. Once we are done for today, let’s see if your flirtation is still working.”

Seraing’s smile grew wider unconsciously. Of course, he remembered this sentence as well.

After nodding, he stood up. He suddenly felt much more stable, as if his energy just got replenished. As he walked away, he heard that Dr Ji was ordering around the others to get him this and that, so he probably felt better too.

The next few hours were pretty strange to Seraing. The monster’s behaviours had changed drastically. If they hadn’t lost so many people, they could’ve taken over the building already, but they still had a much easier job to keep the entrances, compared to the situation before. Of course, some of the soldiers still died. There was no sign of infection; they just got severely wounded, and not in the lucky way as Dr Ji.

They were still lacking ammunition as well. Even if half of the monsters were retreating, a couple of them still wanted to use their opportunity to get some winter snacks, and they continued to flow into the Magnetic Field Center. At least they were pushed back to the outer doors. The eastern door was almost completely gone, but as they held back the waves, they were able to take their initial spot: much closer to the entrance. Seraing aimed to block that entrance with some of the debris from the outside of these gates, but they needed to have a few more hands and a lot more monster-killing for that. They brought more people this time; the soldiers who were kept before for assistance now joined them.

When they reached the outside of the building, the strongest men gathered around, and Seraing and the others were protecting them, while they found some big pieces of metal or rocks, trying to make a new blockade around the place.

They still lost a couple of men, but they managed to retreat with their work halfway done: one more round was needed to finish a useful blockade at last.

Seraing couldn’t count time, and every one of their movements was repetitive: go out, shoot, retreat, go out, shoot, retreat. And then shoot and retreat, shoot and retreat. They kept this up until a message was spreading over the fighting teams. A few messengers were running like their life depended on it, shouting that the Underground City Base had already sent their troops to the Northern Base, and they only had to wait for them for thirty minutes. Some soldiers burst out in tears, and Seraing also felt like his limbs were weakening. He was also stunned: it looked like the Underground City Base had known about the attack on the Northern Base beforehand, since the time to fly here still took plenty of hours. Or they did hear the emergency signals that Dr Ji and the other scientists were sending?

Those thirty minutes seemed to be the longest thirty minutes, knowing that the help was on the way, but they all had the raging fighting spirit to survive. There were no more deaths for now, they all focused, and they all had their ammunition reserved until the reinforcement came – and it sure has arrived.

When they were close enough, the foreign troops were able to connect to their communication system, so even Seraing could’ve heard them. Their language was a bit wacky, but they were still able to have normal conversations – they only needed directions and to follow simple orders anyway.

They started to work together; from inside, their shrinking groups fought bravely, while the newcomers had come from the sky and behind from the monsters. There was no need for Seraing and his team to build a blockade, but it was good at least to hide behind it while they needed to reload their weapons.

Their side was cleared; it took quite some time. Seraing just noticed, that he started to see better among the dust-clouds: the sun had risen already sometime between their attacks. The other side of the building – the main entrance – was in a more sticky situation, so when the eastern part was safe, the foreign soldiers went to help the others, while Seraing started to retreat to the building, making sure, it was truly safe. By the time they got back to the laboratory, the news was already spreading through the air: they won this war.

Their victory felt like a light stream of warm water flowing through their bodies; the relief that it was over and they didn’t have to gather up more energy to stand and shoot anymore: most of the soldiers had collapsed on the spot after it was announced, that the last monster was killed and the whole area is clear.

Seraing’s knees were also very weak, but he stood still. His mind was slow and overloaded with many things, but he still had some strength to go to the military leaders and the foreign groups to thank their help, and speak some words about the next step.

“We brought medicines, food, clean water and clean clothes. Please, collect all of your wounded people in one place, so we can divide them among everyone. Please, carry the dead bodies, people and monsters away as soon as it is possible. It seems that the distortion has stopped and there are no more infections, but non-mutation-related infections are still possible. We bought disinfectants too; please use them on the area around the wounded.”

Seraing met up with Haoyu and the Vice Admiral – his name was Wu Tian – and began to work together. There were still plenty of issues of course, but they also got food and water at some point to replenish their energy once more. Haoyu was about to pass out, but they had cleared up the whole eastern part of the building. They collected the bodies outside, and let the foreign soldiers carry them away to the incinerator. They left the debris for now, and only started moping in the core laboratory, where they decided to put all the injured people.

Once the floor was clean enough, they brought all the blankets and pillows from the residential sections, and let the people lay on the ground, a few meters away from each other to give space for the doctors around them, and to not cause any infection between them. Once they were done, they could rest as well: they were free to go to any room or any place nearby, but it was advised to not go too far from the Magnetic Field Center, just in case some monster stayed hiding between the ruins of the Main City.

Not as if anyone would’ve wanted to go.

Seraing still had a little water and food left, and he was able to wash his face and beat out his coat that changed its colour: so much dust was covering the fabric that its deep black colour seemed to be light grey instead.

Obviously, he had plans for staying at a certain spot, but he didn’t find that spot yet. Despite how low the population had fallen, the people spreading through the laboratory took up almost all the place, and it was quite large for him to see all parts of it with one glance. Especially when people were lying on the ground.

But his hunch was at least right: Dr Ji didn’t go too far from the control panels. He was lying on a blanket as well; someone got him an infusion flask that was hanging from a rolling stand beside him. His wounds were also re-bandaged already. He even got himself two pillows. Seraing almost smiled, and his chest never felt this light, at least not in the near past.

Dr Ji wasn’t sleeping, but he closed his eyes, so he was startled, when he felt Seraing sitting down right on his side, supporting his back on the wall above the doctor. He smiled down at him gently.

 “Are you feeling better?”

“I got some stronger painkillers and anaesthetics. I feel numb.”

This was a fair answer; Seraing should’ve known how dumb his question sounded. He looked at the fresh bandages that were white and clear. The bleeding had stopped entirely.

“Are you hungry? Thirsty? Sleepy? Panicky?”

Dr Ji’s lips trembled.

“I will be if you don’t stop the nonsense askings.” The blond man tried to roll onto his left side, which was still unharmed – by doing so, he got close to Seraing’s outstretched right leg and thigh. Seraing felt the urge to put his right hand on the man’s head to stroke his matted, dusty hair. So he did it. Dr Ji looked up slightly shivering. “How are you, Captain? Did you get hurt outside?”

 “No. Thanks to your work.”

“My work…” Dr Ji repeated, and his words slightly chuckled. He looked down, and unnoticeably tried to sneak closer to Seraing again. Not as if the Judge wasn’t able to notice. So he himself moved a little bit. This way Dr Ji’s folded left hand could easily grab on his pants, and he could also press his face to him, if he wanted. Dr Ji seemed happy about it, resting his forehead right on the side of Seraing’s thigh. “You know what happened today?”

Seraing blinked a few times, trying to understand the other person. Many things had happened, but judging by his tone, it was rather something positive, so he didn’t have any idea.

“No, but you are going to tell me now, right?” He smiled, and Dr Ji cast a bit of a sulking look at him as an answer.

“Don’t use my words against me…” He pouted. Seraing quietly laughed. “For the first day of my life, I was able to speak with my idol.”

“Really?” Seraing didn’t know about Dr Ji’s idol, but he was very much interested. “Who is that?”

“A great scientist. He found the frequency that saved every one of us.”

“Oh. Is he that leader of the Highland Research Institute?” Seraing just heard it around the soldiers, when he was carrying the dead bodies.

“So you know it… then I won’t tell you!”

“I… I don’t know. Please, tell me.” Seraing was so happy, seeing this person acting naturally; he almost teared up, feeling really dumb for this emotion. “I didn’t mean to make you silent.”

“Hmh… he is Pauli Jones.” Dr Ji quickly changed his mind, fortunately.

“Pauli Jones… I heard that name before…” As soon as he said it, he realised, he should’ve stayed silent. “I’m sorry. I hadn’t heard that name before. Would you mind to elaborate?”

Dr Ji’s hand started to play with Seraing’s pants, there was a slight cut on the fabric.

“He was the first Arbiter, and now he saved the world. He is extremely intelligent. His work was always based on understanding the nature of things, while he was taking care of the people as well. I can’t even follow his footsteps. But do you know… he always texted me back, since I first messaged him?”

Seraing slowly slid his hand down from the doctor’s head, and instead of that, he started to stroke his back.

“Because it was illegal to contact the Institute, and because our channels were always kind of unstable, we never actually spoke. But when I joined the emergency line today, and it was finally working, he picked it up… do you know, what was the first thing he asked, when I summarised our situation?”

“No. What did he ask?” Seraing asked gently, learning from his mistakes, and not trying to guess.

“He asked if I was hurt.” Dr Ji’s voice slightly trembled. “Even when I was talking about how many people died or got injured… he asked if I’m hurt.”

Seraing hummed, and he admitted in his mind, that this person was indeed very caring, that had probably moved this oversensitive doctor’s soul.

“He also said things…” The blond man continued. “…things about the work I had done in my life. As if it matters.”

“It matters, though.” Seraing added this bit. Dr Ji was laughing quietly but he didn’t seem that happy. “It does. Where is your confidence, doctor?”

“It’s hiding… or maybe never existed.” The doctor whispered. “I’m not seeing that great work…”

“Because you’re depressed now.” Seraing said calmly, not changing his movements, even though he felt the increasing shiver of Dr Ji. “And that is natural. You will feel better soon, I’m sure.”

“Better? Do you think there is any “better” for me?” Dr Ji’s voice was also shaking a lot more. “Not only my lifetime job isn’t comparable to other’s achievements… I now lost my chance to have any research that can make things better for humanity… there is no such thing as “base” or “experiments” for me anymore… and I even failed to be in a relationship. If we’d lost, I would’ve died single.”

Seraing thought that the last bit of his complaint wasn’t really serious, but then he looked down at the doctor’s face, and started to change his mind. Dr Ji was biting his lips and closed his eyes tightly. How long he was holding back by now? Dr Ji wasn’t a part of the Trial Court, not even a part of the military to show such toughness. But Seraing also understood the situation.

He sighed deeply, and looked around. No one cared for them, no one looked for them. The injured people had already fallen asleep after they got some treatment, and only a few people were still up on their feet, or talking silently like Seraing and Dr Ji, sitting on the floor, eating, or just staring blankly somewhere…

He leaned forward suddenly, and started to undress himself. As soon as he took off his coat, he shook it a few times, and then lifted over Dr Ji, and started to hold it above him like a curtain or a half-tent: it was capable of hiding him from anyone else’s gaze. Dr Ji was looking at him stunned and confused; the coat did cast some shadows on his face, especially since the bright lights were turned off, since people were sleeping. Seraing was only able to see the edges of the other person’s features.

“We have some special habits at the Trial Court.” Seraing said quietly, calmly. “You know very well, that we always had to keep our calm and stay focused and collected. But you also know, how messed up our work is. But we actually had some exercises to solve this issue, which originated from the time when the Trial Court was formed. For many of us, it worked very well. After so many of our people had committed suicide, it seemed very important to pay attention to our mental health and emotional well-being, and it was confirmed, that keeping our negative emotions locked inside will poison us. So… we had a special room that was used for this reason. Either if we needed to shout, punch something or cry… we went there. We kept this habit in our everyday lives as well. We use this method that we call a “safe place”, where we’re allowed to show emotions and let out all the issues that we experienced all day.” Speaking this much, he looked down at Dr Ji again, deeply into his eyes. “You’re safe now. Don’t hold back anymore.”

Dr Ji looked at him for a couple of more seconds, before his eyes started to shine more in the dim light. Then, he pressed his face once again to Seraing’s thigh, and soon enough the young Judge heard the sobbing, sniffing sounds, and felt the violent shaking of the doctor’s body. He wanted to hug him, but he had to hold his coat above him still not to take away his safe place, and make him visible to others. Dr Ji still tried to keep his voice low, but the muffled, painful whimpers and groans made Seraing’s heart ache.

Seraing didn’t say a word while he was crying, didn’t lower his arms, even when they were also trembling, he just held them out silently, patiently waiting for the doctor to feel better. It wasn’t a surprise that it took so long for him to let everything out; he probably was keeping it all in for a much longer time than he should have.

As the intensity of Dr Ji’s tears faded, Seraing lowered his arms – still not fully. Instead, he changed his position and slid down into lying, turning on his right side, facing Dr Ji. He folded his arms to hold up his coat, but now he was inside the small tent as well.

“Your work helped us to identify xenogenics in the past years.” He said quietly, and the doctor just looked at him. “You’re the reason that the magnetic pole was still working and unaffected when the magnetic field collapsed once again. And… excuse me, but who said you are single?”

Dr Ji was still shivering, but for this last question he stopped, probably by the shock; it was harder to see all the little changes on his face in the shadow of their safe place, even looking at him from so close.

“But…” His voice was raspy and he sounded as if he had cold; he cleared his throat right away as he spoke. “But I… I’m disabled now… I don’t have my… did you even find me attractive before?”

Seraing raised his eyebrows, surprised by this question.

“What makes you think I don’t find you attractive even right now?”

“You… you never… never showed or made any comment about it.”

Seraing frowned as he tried to remember if he truly didn’t say anything that had indicated his physical needs. He thought he did, but maybe he was too subtle with it.

“Well, I’ve never showed much emotion in general, right? And I would’ve felt embarrassed in front of you if you saw me that way, so I tried to keep it together until you weren’t able to see me.”

Dr Ji made a sound; he probably wanted to click with his tongue, but because of the crying, his nose wasn’t clear and the sound turned into snoring.

 “Liar…”

“I’m not,” Seraing said right away.

 “Then prove it.”

The young Judge got confused. How should he prove that he felt that way many times? He wasn’t able to show his memories. Should he tell him about his dreams? But before he found a solution, Dr Ji had spoken again.

“Seraing… if you don’t kiss me now, I’m gonna cry.”

He wasn’t joking: his eyes were already teary again; after some time of resting, his tear ducts got refilled.

“Please, don’t cry,” Seraing said in a low voice, staring into the sparkly eyes before he leaned forward.

His heart was about to jump out of his throat in his excitement, but he wanted to do it slow. Their lips just gently rested on each other for a long second, before Seraing carefully asked for approval to enter. The kiss was salty at first, because of Dr Ji’s tears, but then the doctor let him in. As they finally merged in a real kiss, Seraing felt some bitterness – maybe the drugs he got had an after-taste – then meticulously stroked and licked the doctor’s teeth and began to beg for a dance between their tongues. After some attentive, deep and slow movements, he reached the soft, moist and sweet flavour that he was waiting for.

In the beginning, it was slightly uncomfortable – not the kiss, but the posture as he had to hold himself up above the doctor, while he was still holding his jacket – but as soon as Dr Ji kissed back, the faint pain and tiredness in his body got a backseat, and he couldn’t care less anymore. He only focused on the blond man’s lips and warmness.

Dr Ji’s body once again shook like a poplar leaf. Seraing felt the hotness he emitted, and how he wasn’t able to hold back: panting, faint moans and whimpers came out of his throat and resonated between their lips. After Dr Ji found his bravery, he tried to take the lead in their dance as well, speeding up their pace, biting down on Seraing’s lips… When he sucked on the Judge’s tongue, he couldn’t control himself either; all of the fine hair was standing on his nape, and tickling electricity flashed through his body, right into his crotch, making him throb and heat up, hardening his member under his clothes. Ever since Dr Ji touched his back on that night it was very difficult for Seraing to keep his physical desires in control whenever he was thinking about this person. It baffled him how Dr Ji thought he was not attractive enough for him.

Then he felt the increasing wetness between their faces, and Dr Ji was the one who ran out of breath first. Seraing also gasped for air, as they ended the kiss, and just pressed their forehead to each other’s. Dr Ji’s were much hotter than Seraing’s; he probably had a slight fever.

“I thought if I kiss you, you’re not going to cry,” Seraing whispered in a raspy voice. Dr Ji sniffled and choked again.

“I… I’m tooh… emotional now, okay?” He tried to scold him, but with his crying, high-pitched voice, he was just simply cute. “It’s your fault a-anyway! Everything is your fault!”

“Yes, I understand. It’s my fault.” Seraing accepted his words calmly, not taking them to his heart.

 “You’ve… you’ve rejected me so many times… I was so miserable…!”

 “I apolo…”

“Don’t fucking say it! I’m sick of that word! Don’t you fucking dare to say it ever again! I hate it!”

“Alright, I understood. Sorry. I’m not saying it.”

Dr Ji seemed to calm down hearing this, and he tried to move a little bit. But as soon as he was about to get close to Seraing’s chest, he suddenly jerked, and a painful whimper left his mouth.

“Careful.” Seraing frowned again. “Do you want to change position?”

 “… hug me…”

 “I’m holding the coat…”

 “I don’t care. Hug me…”

 “Alright.”

Seraing tried to throw the coat onto them, so it was still covering their faces, and finally lowered his numbed arms to move Dr Ji’s body into them. The doctor pressed his hot, damp face into Seraing’s neck and took a deep, snuffling breath. His body seemed to be relaxing after this, but it was still very hot.

 “Seraing…”

 “Hm?”

“I said… it was your fault… that An Zhe escaped.” Dr Ji’s voice got a little bit weaker, as he pressed his mouth to Seraing’s neck. Feeling his breath on his skin made the young Judge shiver. “But… but I was happy… that you chose to save me. I didn’t really blame you… I don’t want… want you to leave me next time if I was…”

Seraing smiled once again.

 “Don’t worry, I know.”

“Then… then you won’t leave me over your duty?”

 “No, I won’t leave you.”

“If I fell asleep… and those many kinds of people will steal your attention… will you leave me behind?”

Seraing wasn’t sure who were those “many kinds of people” who stole his attention.

 “Are you jealous?”

 “Shut up… just answer…”

The young Judge sighed deeply, and gave a small kiss to Dr Ji’s ear.

“No, I won’t leave you.” He repeated. “You don’t have to share my attention with anyone.” Well, he knew how much this oversensitive doctor liked attention.

“Mn… good… I don’t want to share you with anyone….” Dr Ji’s voice got lower and lower with every word he spoke. Seraing was still thinking who could make the doctor jealous, when Seraing himself wasn’t even that close with people, before he realised, that the blond man had truly fallen asleep.

Seraing himself felt a bit tired too, but in this manner, hugging the wounded Dr Ji, he didn’t dare to sleep. He didn’t want to cause him pain unintentionally in his sleep, and he was a light sleeper anyway. So he was just lying there with him, stroking his back, even after his breathing balanced and got deeper when he finally fully sank into his dreams. Seraing watched over him until some scientists came up to them, saying that they had cleared out a few rooms in the residential area, and the severely injured soldiers would be taken there – Dr Ji wasn’t a soldier, but he was a highly appreciated and respected scientist and he was also severely injured, so they wanted to give him a room.

But he kept his promise. Even when Dr Ji was carried away – he was probably extremely tired, or they were so good at carrying him that he didn’t wake up – Seraing followed him, despite the fact that some of the military members wanted to stop him for a word or two. He refused them, and joined the doctor in his new room. He never again wanted to break his promise, and make this person hurt.
